Buftea Bypass to relieve traffic near Bucharest

Vienna, 28.11.2024 – PORR has been commissioned by the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure to build a 5.8km-long bypass around the Bucharest satellite town Buftea. The contract represents an important addition to the transport infrastructure and is one of many large-scale orders that PORR is delivering for the ministry.

Just like the Romanian capital Bucharest, the satellite town Buftea is currently being overrun by through traffic. Every day, a convoy of vehicles travelling to and from Bucharest charges through the town. The new “Buftea Bypass” should provide some relief. PORR is building a two-lane bypass with three interchanges, three overpasses and two car parks across a length of 5.77 km.

In addition to relieving congestion in Buftea itself, the bypass is also an important feature in the evolution of Romania’s transport infrastructure. This is because it will connect to the future Bucharest bypass via a roundabout, thereby helping to get the daily hours-long traffic jams in the capital under control.

Key player in road construction

“The ever-growing traffic congestion in Bucharest and its surrounding area makes it especially important to have a reliable provider with a proven track record. What counts here is swift and flawless execution”, says PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss. “PORR has established itself as a key player in Romanian road construction and has already successfully completed numerous contracts”.

PORR’s previous road construction projects include the already completed Lot 1 of the Sibiu - Piteşti motorway, the follow-up order for Lot 4, the DN 5 federal road on the Romanian-Bulgarian border and the Arad bypass. Like the previous contracts, the Buftea bypass is also being realised using the design & build method. This method involves construction companies early on in the planning phase and allows for a particularly time-saving construction method.

This works especially well in Romania, says Strauss: “One of the strengths of the Romanian contract award process is that large sections that have a high number of engineering structures are awarded in a single lot. This allows for very efficient construction and the lessons learnt from the individual structures can be easily transferred to other elements on the route”.
