PORR S.A.’s contract for the section called „the spine of Warmia and Mazury”

Warsaw, 28.05.2020 – PORR S.A. and the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways signed a contract for the design and construction of the S16 Olsztyn-Ełk in the section from Borki Wielkie to Mrągowo. Over a period of three years a 13-km long express road section and Mrągowo’s ring road will be built. The contract’s gross volume amounts to more than PLN 625 m (EUR 138 m).

The task covers the design and construction of a 13-km long dual carriageway express road running from Borki Wielkie to Mrągowo, with two lanes in each direction, paved over with asphalt. The task also includes the execution of single carriageway GP class roads (fast traffic trunk roads)  - a ca. 1-km long section of DK59 and a more than 2-km long section of DK16. The contract provides for, among others, the construction of retention tanks, animal crossings, noise protection barriers and crash barriers.

The new road will run near such municipalities as Borki Wielkie, Sorkwity, Nowe Bagienice, Marcinkowo. The express road will only be accessible via interchanges Sorkwity, Bagienice, Mrągowo. Mrągowo’s ring road, which is to be built along DK59 as part of the task, will allow to bypass the city on its south-east side, thereby directing transit traffic out of the city.

The task will be performed within 36 months as of signing the contract. The investment completion time does not comprise winter periods (from 15th December until 15th March). It is planned to complete the project in the 4th quarter of 2023. Design works will start after signing the contract, road construction works are planned to begin in the 2nd half-year of 2021.

The section between Borki Wielkie and Mrągowo, whose construction PORR is in charge of, will constitute the next S16 express road extension stage, which, due to its important role in the whole region’s transportation system, is called „the spine of Warmia and Mazury”. The planned route passes through Iława, Ostróda, Olsztyn, Mrągowo until it reaches Ełk.

„The S16 is yet another big contract in the field of infrastructure acquired this year by PORR S.A.’s team. Alike the DK18 and the S1, S16’s significance for the region, the country and for international transport is enormous. Being aware of the role played by the spine of Warmia and Mazury on the Polish roadmap, we undertake to perform the task with even greater commitment”, said PORR S.A. CEO, Piotr Kledzik.
